As children, we spent the early evening hours as the sun faded into the western sky frolicking in the summer grass chasing fireflies. They lit the way with their ambient glimmers: filling our young minds with curiosity and a sense of adventure.
Firefly Farms pursues specialty-crop farming with that same child-like wonder and exploration. We grow heirloom fruits, vegetables, herbs, and flowers that are as historic as our homestead and with flavor points that excite local chefs and home cooks alike.
We spend our days working in the soil and observing nature take her course. We rest under the shade of the fruit trees in our orchard listening to the bluebirds sing and watching the barn swallows aerial acrobatics and return home with stories to tell and ideas to share.
Firefly Farm’s roots were planted over 100 years ago when the first structure was built on this land. The land has been in the Garcia family since Bob and Violet purchased it in 1950. It is a second-generation farm now with their son, Ron, and his wife, Leah, as stewards.
Over the years, the land has seen many iterations and eventful times – it has been home to a small working sheep and soybean farm, a world-class motorcycle shop, and now a specialty crop farm focusing on resource conservation and regenerative practices. It has endured wildfires and a tornado and has proven to be resilient!
Since its launch in 2015, Firefly Farm has hosted numerous critically acclaimed farm-to-table dinners, a highly popular farmer’s market, weddings, an array of private parties and events, and a farmers’ book club. Most importantly, though, has been the growing program. Firefly Farm has focused on heirloom vegetables, specifically heirloom tomatoes, on which it has built its reputation. We are proud to grow and sell produce that is known for its flavor.
In 2020, Firefly Farm forged a connection with Tallgrass Hemp and Cannabis. We are excited to contribute to the research and resurgence of hemp, Kansas’ newest and oldest fiber, grain, and food crop.
We look at ourselves first as soil farmers. Healthy soil contains fungi, bacteria, and a diverse array of microorganisms essential for maintaining the biodiversity that supports healthy plant growth and ecosystem functioning.
We work at each level of our production to make sure our soil is the best it can be, so that it produces nutrient-dense food with superior flavors.
This regenerative farming practice reflects our holistic approach to agriculture and environmentalism that goes beyond simply growing food. It’s a way of cultivating the land that enhances its natural resources and creates a harmonious balance between humans and nature. It’s an invitation to reconnect with the soil, water, air, and wildlife and to create a better understanding of our place in it.
We host three annual events at Firefly Farm.
Each event is tailored to match the season.
